Physical Education
We place a huge amount of importance in being physically active here at Mudeford Community Infants school. We see the difference it makes to our children's lives across the entire range of their development. To promote participation in physical activity and sport we ensure daily 'Active Time' sessions in Reception throughout the first two terms. This ensures the overwhelming majority of children achieve their Early Learning Goal for Gross Motor Skills. Throughout all year groups, teaching staff deliver a high quality, progressive programme of study to facilitate development of fundamental movement skills through Complete PE Complete PE | An Interactive Physical Education Resource. Lunchtimes are active with a range of equipment to use and games for children to take part in. Ofsted recognised that, 'playtimes are fun because there are many activities, such as football, cheer leading, hula hooping and exploring the climbing frame.'
We ensure as many children as possible participate in sports clubs with a free place after school for all Year 2 children with a sports coach in Dance, Gymnastics, Tennis and Basketball. This leaves a lasting impact leading to children having the mindset that sports clubs are part of their routine throughout childhood and that practise, participation and dedication leads to long term success and sustained improvement. As well as this, through Christchurch school sports partnership, many children participate in a range of sports activities throughout the year in events with other schools. We prioritise children according to the event, whether it be to encourage children to participate, provide opportunity for vulnerable children or for our most talented children to showcase their potential.
We want children to recognise that healthy competition is fun and rewarding and that supporting and working together as a team can be hugely invigorating. This is why there is half-termly colour team competitions within classes across the school at the end of each unit of learning. Children apply their skills in a simple game situation that leads to an overall score for their colour team.
All of this contributes to children valuing physical activity and seeing it as a must have in their lives as they make their way to the Junior school and beyond.
