Remote Education – Information for Parents/Carers (Jan 2021)

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The Remote Curriculum: What is taught to pupils at home?

What should my child expect on the first day of remote education?

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.  Guidance will be provided from the school on the first day of remote learning.  This will follow the typical timetable for the remote learning day but will not involve any live sessions.  Children will receive:

Morning
An e-mail outlining a suggested timetable for the day.
English based tasks – linked to Reading and Writing skills that are matched to where staff in school have assessed your child to be working.  This may include links to Read, Write, Inc resources on The Ruth Miskin You Tube Channel, Oxford Owl books, access to Reading Eggs, letter formation or short writing task, etc.  Approximately 1 hour of activities will be provided.
Maths based tasks – matched to where staff in school have assessed your child to be working.  This may include Doodle Maths tasks, links to sessions provided externally (e.g. Oak Academy), counting activities, calculations activities, etc.  Approximately 1 hour of activities will be provided.
Afternoon
One project based task – linked to the project your child is studying in school at the time.  Approximately 1 hour of activities will be provided.

Will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would be if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. We may need to make some adaptations in some subjects for example art based project work that you may not have access to the resources needed at home, PE sessions that require apparatus, etc.  On the return to school following a period of remote education, teachers will where possible re-map activities missed and build them in to other projects as appropriate.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils three hours to complete.  This will be made up of activities linked to the curriculum your child would have been receiving in school.  Additional activities and useful websites will be signposted centrally on the school website should you require any additional resources beyond the three hours.

Accessing Remote Education

How will my child access any online remote education being provided by the school?

Remote education is provided using The Google Classroom platform.  Children have all received individual log in details (please contact the school office should you have not received this).  Teachers will set work, share resources and live sessions and provide feedback on work uploaded from home.

If your child does not have digital or on-line access at home, please contact the school office and support will be provided.  Where possible the school will lend devices to support access.  In some instances it may be necessary for us to provide paper based activities to best support your child.  If this is required, collection and feedback arrangements will be discussed with you.

How will my child be taught remotely?

The following timetable will be provided within the first two days of children moving to remote education:

Morning
A daily greeting pre-recorded video will be uploaded each day by 8.15am

  • Staff will aim to excite, enthuse, engage and set up the day
  • They will explain the afternoon project based task to your child
  • They will sign post additional daily learning activities e.g. Reading Eggs, Doodle Maths, Jasmine (PE)
A live English session delivered to 2 groups of 15 children that will be closely linked to the activities your child undertakes in their Read, Write, Inc and English sessions in school.  Children will have a 15 minute input delivered live and their independent activities will be set within this.  Following the session children will have 45 minutes to complete their independent tasks.  Resources for the independent activities e.g. links to on-line books, writing frames, word cards, etc will be posted on to Google classrooms for your child to access.

10.45 Live Maths session Group 2

Please note – all live sessions are recorded and a link to it is provided as soon as possible after its delivery.  We appreciate that working commitments and childcare for siblings may mean that it is not always possible for your child to access a live session and as such the links mean they can view the session at a later time.  We do strongly recommend that children attend live lessons wherever possible.
Afternoon
An afternoon project based activity will be explained to the children in the pre-recorded daily greeting.  Teachers will share relevant materials e.g. powerpoints, on-line games, work sheets, activities, etc to Google classrooms for your child to access.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents/carers should provide at home?

Support from Parents/Carers:

It is beneficial for young children to maintain a regular and familiar routine and, where possible, we would recommend parents follow a consistent routine.  We strongly encourage parents to support their children’s learning, including finding an appropriate place to work and encouraging them to work with good levels of concentration.

  • Remote learning replaces in-school provision and usual attendance policy applies.  You must therefore contact your child’s class teacher if your child is unable to participate for any reason.
  • Where accessing technology is difficult, families should contact the school to discuss ways this could be supported.
  • Staff can expect parents with children learning remotely to:
  • Make the school aware if their child is unwell or otherwise cannot complete work
  • Seek help from the school if they need it
  • Be respectful in their interaction with staff
Expectations for the engagement of Children:

  • Continue to follow the Golden Rules:
  • To be kind in all we say and do
  • To be honest in all we do
  • To treat each other fairly
  • To make good choices
  • To respect what people say, believe and think
  • To remember our learning values when completing their remote learning activities:

Code of conduct for ‘Live’ sessions:

All children are expected to follow this guidance for all virtual sessions or meetings:

  • A parent or carer should be present for the duration of the call (although they do not need to be visible on the screen)
  • Prompt attendance will help to make sure the session goes smoothly and is not interrupted throughout
  • Be dressed and ready for the day (dressing gowns and PJ’s are not suitable!)
  • Be aware of your location and what is visible on screen
  • Avoid background distractions such as the TV (or siblings if possible!)
  • Be respectful to everyone
  • Please refrain from using virtual backgrounds as this may distract from the learning

Remember…….

  • Sessions will be recorded and shared
  • Usernames or passwords should not be shared
  • Do not post or upload anything that might cause upset (remember the first Golden Rule is to be kind!)

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Remote learning replaces in-school provision and usual attendance policy applies.  You must therefore contact your child’s class teacher if your child is unable to participate for any reason.  Where children attend in school provision their attendance will be logged and tracked by the school office and reported to class teachers.  Teachers will keep a register and log engagement with remote education and will seek to support families in full attendance.

How will you assess my children’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • Feedback is provided via Google Classrooms.
  • Staff will try to provide feedback before 4pm Monday – Thursday and before 1pm on a Friday (due to teachers planning and preparation time for the following week).
  • Focused feedback of key learning for English and maths will be provided on a weekly basis
  • A short comment will be provided for uploaded project work
  • Teachers will explain to parents and children which the key learning pieces are to support effective feedback and may request a focused parental comment to support their understanding of achievement
  • Feedback may sometimes be provided as 2/3 stars and a wish
  • Teachers will acknowledge all learning with a consistent mark to show children and parents it has been seen even if detailed feedback has not be provided.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote learning?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils.

In the first instance, please share any concerns you may have with your child’s class teacher and they can advise the most appropriate course of support.  Our SENCo and Pastoral Support Worker are available to support families where needed and teachers will liaise with them accordingly.

If your child receives specific support in school e.g. a weekly Speech and Language programme, we will liaise with you about how this can be maintained until the remote education period has ended.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their class remains in school, how remote education is provided will differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Teachers will provide remote education as soon as possible after being notified that a child will be self-isolating (taking in to account they will likely be teaching a full day in class when notified of the first day in self-isolation).  The following timetable will be provided within the first two days of a child self-isolating:
